Chris Holownia, S. J.
Music Director for Les Miserables
Chris Holownia, S.J. is ecstatic to return to WDW after directing the music for “The Phantom of the Opera” last summer — not to mention doing the same for “Les Mis” 13 years ago! Chris has been proudly involved with WDW since 1997, both on and off the stage, as a member of the Board of Directors, and even as a director himself, and he credits this organization with his success in the worlds of music, theatre, and education. Raised in Wellesley, he is a graduate of Yale University (B.A., Philosophy), Simmons University (M.A.T., Foreign Languages), and Loyola University Chicago (M.A., Theology). He currently studies at Boston College’s Clough School of Theology and Ministry. He has been playing the piano and singing for as long as he can remember. While at Yale, Chris conducted the Spizzwinks(?) and the Whiffenpoofs, two a cappella groups with which he produced five albums and regaled audiences the world over with humor and song. As a young professional, he established the Mandarin Chinese program at Wellesley Middle and High Schools where he taught foreign languages for four years after completing his undergraduate degree. He subsequently moved into the private school sector to teach for six more years at the Rivers School in Weston, serving for his last two years there as 9th & 10th Grade Dean. From 2007-17 he directed music and choirs at St. John the Evangelist Church in Wellesley on weekends while working throughout the Boston area as a freelance music director, voice teacher, and accompanist. In addition to being an avid actor and vocalist himself, Chris loves the theatre and has directed the music for countless musicals, ranging from amateur middle school productions to fully fledged professional shows. Since joining the Society of Jesus (a.k.a. the Jesuits) in 2017, he has enjoyed a variety of other ministerial experiences, including hospital chaplaincy, prison chaplaincy, retreat ministry, and parish ministry. From 2021-23 he taught Religion, Latin, and Ancient Greek at Fordham Preparatory School in Bronx, NY, simultaneously committing himself to their Campus Ministry Department, Dramatic Society, and Liturgical Choir. It is difficult for him to express the immense amount of gratitude he feels to God, to Chris Brindley, and to his rector, George Collins, S.J., for allowing him the opportunity to continue working with his WDW family this season. He sees theatre, music, and art more broadly as potential pathways to divine encounter – viae pulchritudinis – and treasures the tremendous role WDW has played in his life, not only in nurturing but also in nourishing his vocation, his talents, and his soul. AMDG!
